FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP OF BROOME

Death of Pope John Paul II

In light of the news of the Holy Father's death, the Diocese of Broome joins Christians throughout the world in praying for the late Pope John Paul II and giving thanks for the remarkable life that he led in the service of the Gospel and humanity.

Bishop Christopher Saunders, the Bishop of Broome, said “The Holy Father was one of the great leaders of his time. He will be remembered for his part in bringing peace to so many different parts of the world through his words and actions. During his pontificate, he issued hundreds of pronouncements and encyclical letters on pressing global issues concerning human life and dignity, faith, social concerns, the needs of the poor and peace in lands afflicted with war, poverty and cultural tensions”.

"As the most travelled pontiff he brought his message of hope to the peoples of over 120 countries. Of particular note was his contribution to bringing down the Iron Curtain and helping in the liberation of millions of people. His words of peace and consolation in tragic times were always words of hope and promise. He undoubtedly was a servant of God and the spiritual leader of the Christian world”.

"Catholic Churches throughout the Kimberley will join with Churches elsewhere in offering Masses and prayers giving thanks for his life of service. Our prayer is that he will receive his eternal reward”.

"His exemplary life as a successor of the Apostles has been a source of inspiration for many. May God bless him and may he rest in peace”

A memorial Mass will be offered for the repose of the Holy Father's soul at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral in Brome on Monday 4 th April at 5.30pm .
