Road Open - An Exciting Journey into Kimberley Catholic Schools
By Sandra Brogden

On Sunday 2 November the Catholic Education Office of Western Australia launched the exciting new DVD Road Open at St Mary's College Secondary Campus Broome. Special guests were welcomed to Yawuru country by Erica Bernard and the Road Open DVD was officially launched by Mrs Patricia Brown, Deputy Director of Catholic Education of WA and Ms Gaye Yu, Senior Education Officer at the Department of Science and Training Broome District Office.

Bishop Christopher Saunders, Principals from the Kimberley Catholic Schools and staff and families from as far away as Gibb River were amongst the crowd who attended the launch. The highlight of the evening was the viewing of some amazing scenes on the DVD itself. The music, dancing, scenery and powerful messages from community members from across the Kimberley make for compelling viewing.

The unique project was made possible by a grant from the Department of Education Science and Training under their Indigenous Education Strategic Initiatives program. The DVD is the result of the cooperation of people from communities across the Kimberley region who generously shared their culture and knowledge through song, dance and commentary .

The key to the success of this resource was the involvement of Aboriginal people at all levels. It was created by Kimberley people, with Kimberley people, for Kimberley people. Road Open is a highly valuable tool for new teachers: for enhancing cross cultural understanding; for supporting the use of the Arts across the curriculum; for enhancing the self esteem of Aboriginal students and providing families across the Kimberley with many hours of enjoyment whilst watching and learning about each other. (Road Open is available from Catholic Education Office, Kimberley Region for $35.)
