Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery Tutor, Trish Bremner

The Reading Recovery Pilot Project, co-ordinated by St. Mary’s College in Broome in conjunction with the CEO Melbourne, Melbourne University and the CEO Broome, began early in Term
1. Reading Recovery is a well researched and documented early reading and writing intervention strategy. It necessitates that a teacher develops a level of expertise and works with a child one to one for half an hour each day. The strategy is used throughout the world and is highly acclaimed.

Last year St Mary’s began intense discussions to investigate how Reading Recovery could be brought to The Kimberley. There have been countless meetings and hard work. It was with a sense of anticipation and hope that teachers from across the Kimberley finally gathered for three days of professional development at the CEO Broome. The professional development was facilitated by Trish Bremner, a Reading Recovery Tutor and teacher at St. Mary’s. She will continue to work closely with teachers throughout the year. Schools involved in The Reading Recovery Pilot Project are Djarindjin Lombadina, Derby, Wyndham, Kununurra and Broome. We look forward to monitoring this program. We wish all those involved every success. In particular, we look forward to hearing of the success it brings to our Kimberley students.
