A new book -
Emo and San Salvador

Juanita Gower has her copy of 'Emo and San Salvador' signed by the author, Sr Brigida Nailon: Photo A Hayden

At the Broome Library on May 2nd, Sr Brigida Nailon’s latest book on the early days of the Kimberley Church was launched. The book, Emo and San Salvador, which was commissioned by Bishop Christopher Saunders, follows the story of the ministry of the early missionaries to the Kimberley led by Frenchmen of the Trappist Order from Sept-Fons. Fr Nicholas Emo, a Spanish Priest, accompanied the Trappists as a novice and spent his early days as the administrator of the young Catholic community in Broome. Sr Brigida’s book concerns this legendary figure and his travels throughout the north in his lugger the San Salvador.

The evening was hosted by the Broome Shire Library and was attended by around forty members of the local Broome community. Introducing Sr Brigida and filling the role of Master of Ceremonies was Br Shane Wood from the office of the Bishop of Broome. Unfortunately, Bishop Saunders was in Sydney for the Australian Bishops Conference, but a letter that he wrote for inclusion in the second volume was read in which he emphasised the importance of this historical record.

The official launch of the book was performed by Fr Kevin McKelson. Many people stayed behind to chat and to have their copies of the book signed by Sr Brigida.

Those wishing to view the two volume work or to purchase their own copy can contact the Kimberley Bookshop.
