Tall Ship Sailing

During the last week of Term Two, twelve students of St Mary’s College, Broome set sail up the Kimberley coast aboard the Tall Ship, Leeuwin II, for an exciting 5 day ocean adventure. They joined a crew of about 30 other students from all over the Kimberley, participating in sailing activities which involved team work, communication, problem solving skills, decision making and leadership skills.

They faced many challenges: interacting closely with new people, the physical nature of sailing, being involved in ‘watches’ at all times of the day and night, climbing the masts, setting the sails, steering the ship and the list goes on.

A highlight for some students was to climb 33 metres up the tallest mast on the ship to read a special message at the very top, thus joining an elite group.

Keep watch for details about the next ‘Broome Leaders’ voyage to take place around the same time in 2008.
