“There is a variety of gifts
but always the same Spirit;
There are all sorts of
service to be done,
But always to the same Lord;
Working in all sorts of
different ways in different people,
It is the same God
who is working
in all of them.”

Kimberley collage

By: Colleen Brennan
Coordinator, Broome Residential College

Students from across the Kimberley, and resident in the Broome Residential College, have recently completed this great mural which now hangs in the College. The students were encouraged to paint a recollection of their home using the theme “my country, my home, my story”.

They enthusiastically drew Kimberley moons, rivers in flood, gorges, Brahman bulls, men with bush tucker, snakes, goannas, birds, and station country. These drawings were enlarged and transferred to canvas panels to make the mural.
The jade blue panels in-between represent the Broome ocean and add contrast to the warm desert colours in the students’ paintings.

The Wall Mural is made up of 63 canvas boards, joined together and adhered to plywood making one large structure using the idea ‘one world – many visions’ as inspiration. This method was suitable because we painted in the dining room and had to watch our mess!

The students found it challenging trying to see the big picture....but they persevered and turned up each week. The students feel really good about having something bold, bright, and colourful that belongs to them, hanging in the dining room hall.
