Flood waters invade small community

Sunday 13th March 2011 will long be remembered in the story of Warmun, as a day of disaster and great loss for the remote community, 166 km north of Halls Creek.

Built on each side of Turkey Creek, the village of 67 houses was devastated by a huge flood the like of which had never been seen before. Only 20 houses remain – none of them habitable.

On that terrible afternoon people fled to higher ground to take refuge at the Roadhouse and at the Warmun Retreat Centre (Mirrilingki Spirituality Centre). The Retreat Centre provided meals and shelter for over 150 people – a constant number over the next few days. Eventually many of the people were evacuated to Kununurra and many children are now going to school at St Joseph’s in Kununurra.

Meanwhile, Warmun Retreat Centre staff, Alasdair and Janyne Brand and Joan McPherson, ably assisted by Joan Burfitt and Tim Bussemaker, are still cleaning up. Together with Pat Clifford and the School Principal, Leanne Hodge, and her staff and the Josephite Sisters - these are among the unsung heroes of the great flood of Warmun.
