Obituary
Ivan John Gogler RIP
Born - 20 October 1931
Entered Eternal Life - 8 March 2011

Ivan was born in Adelaide, the fourth in a family of five children, with his four siblings all having pre-deceased him. Ivan had previously worked as a Ranger at Geiki Gorge and Exmouth National Parks before he and his wife Joan came to Broome in 1978.

Ivan taught Science at Nulungu Secondary College (now St Mary’s College) where he was also responsible for constructing the College oval which has been named after him. Most of this he did by pick and shovel - dressed only in shorts, an unbuttoned shirt, thongs, large brimmed hat and sunglasses. One of his former students said that he purposely got into trouble in school as he wanted to be put on the work force after school because he enjoyed working beside Ivan, and he learned so much from him.

Having left teaching, Ivan set up a very successful drafting and engineering drawing business known as I&J Drafting. He was meticulous with his detail and also drew up plans for the new Cathedral here in Broome. Later, as a sideline, he ran a popular poster shop which included framing photos.

What shone out most about Ivan was his love of Joan and his faith. He always made a special effort to show his romantic side on Joan's birthday and went to a lot of effort to buy her a surprise present. His faith in God never wavered and he was a regular at daily mass and at religious devotions whenever he had the opportunity. He served for a time on the Parish Council of Broome Cathedral Parish and was noted as an ideas man and a man of action. He had a strong sense of community and was always ready with a clever quip, joke or humorous story.

Ivan was a compassionate man who had a strong sense of justice.

He was a man who possessed many skills which included him constructing his own home in 1981.

Last year Ivan realized that the time had come to reconnect with family in Sydney. Ivan could see that it was the right move and considered Joan's welfare above his own. This is the true test of love.

Ivan and Joan are sorely missed by the community of Broome. However everyone is thankful that Joan is being cared for by family members. May he rest in peace.
