St Joseph the Worker Feast Day: May 01

This is the second feast of St Joseph that the Church celebrates each year, the first falling on March 19.

St Joseph is a very important saint. He is the husband of the Virgin Mary and foster-father of Jesus.

The bible doesn’t contain one word spoken by this carpenter of Nazareth. But even without words he shows he is a man of deep faith and spirit; a man who listens in silence to the word of God and in this is his greatness.

Today we celebrate his witness to hard work. He was a carpenter who laboured many hours a day with the boy Jesus helping in the carpenter shop. He teaches us that all work is important and through it we serve our family and society. The way in which we work says a lot about the kind of people we are.

Many countries have one day every year to show their respect for workers. In Australia this day is celebrated as Labour Day and honours the contributions of workers. In 1955 the church gave us a wonderful model in St Joseph the Worker.
